The Church of San Francesco della Scarpa

One of my favourite sights in Sulmona is the magnificent portal of the former Church of St. Francesco della Scarpa. The church was built by Franciscan monks under the Angevin rule.  It had been severely affected by several earthquakes.  Today we can still admire the marvellous side portal.

While  the charming magic of  SS. Annunziata’s palace results from the complete asymmetry of its architectural decoration, the severe beauty  of the St. Francesco’s Church origins from its absolute harmony.
