One More Beautiful Borough Near the Scanno Lake
Saint Dominic who had founded the hermitage near the lake is a saint patron of the town of Villalago. The latter is a tiny borough where live only 632 inhabitants. I guess that we met them all when we went through the town last Sunday. Quite a few elderly people gathered after service near the Cathedral; young proud couples were walking slowly with baby carriages, school children were playing ball in a sport ground. In short the ancient borough made a very lively impression.
The borough is beautifully located in a scenic Alpine valley surrounded by great mountains. As well as the borough of Scanno it is included in the Club of the most beautiful boroughs of Italy. The first mentioning about Villalago as Villa de Lacu is traced back to the very beginning of the 11th century. It was founded as a settlement near the Monastery of Saint Peter on the lake. It seems that today the borough has absolutely the same look as ten centuries ago.
