The Hermitage of San Domenico

Near the grand Scanno Lake there is situated a small artificial lake named after San Domenico, a saint patron of a piccolo borough di Villalago. This small lake is famous not only for its harmonious beauty but for the hermitage of San Domenico where the saint used to escap for prayer and meditation. The small and narrow cave had been cut in a callous rock at the end of IX century. Soon after that San Domenico had founded a hermitage dedicated to the Holy Trinity.

In order to get into the hermitage one has to pass a bridge. The church was built in a Roman style more than a millennium ago. On the balcony in front of the main door there are twin arc windows looking at the lake. This is the most beautiful view I’ve ever seen.

Inside the church on the right hand there is a statue of San Domenico. On the left side there is a fresco of Madonna with a child. Behind the altar there is a narrow and steep staircase leading to the hermitage of San Domenico. Only a true saint could spent time in such an uncomfortable cave!

Every 21-22 of August there takes place a pilgrimage to the hermitage of San Domenico.
