The Church of Our Lady of the Lake

Right on the shore of the Scanno Lake is situated a very charming church of  Our Lady of the Lake (Immaculate). It was built in 1702 in the Roman-Gothic style and since then it has been enlarged and restricted many times. At first it was built in the rock and then there was added a gallery over the road. As a result a very unusual church has been created

I went up the staircase and found myself in a tiny sanctuary. The church is entirely built in a hard grey rock. The splendid altar is situated against the background of an untilled stone. The contrast between the exquisite altar and the wild rock is really striking!

Every summer on July 16th a great festival of fireworks “La Fiaccolata” takes place at the Scanno Lake. The church of the Our Lady of the Lake is one of its focal points.
